Volume 89 - Spring/Summer 2005

Combining Self Studies
by Marcia A. Armstrong, PhD, MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA)
Chair, Programs Approval Review Committee
Phlebotomy programs that are located within the same institution and with the same Program Director as an accredited CLT/MLT or CLS/MT program may soon have the opportunity to combine these two programs into one Self-Study Report. The site visit for the accredited program will include a look at the phlebotomy program at the same time. A brief interim report will be submitted for the phlebotomy program between cycles of the accredited program. The NAACLS review committees are meeting this summer to work on the details of this combined Self-Study Report and will place a motion before the Board of Directors to approve the process. The ability to combine the programs into one Self-Study Report should alleviate the duplication of documentation and narrative for programs that have overlap on many of the 21 standards and will allow program directors to write only one full Self-Study Report during the accreditation cycle.

There are several excellent phlebotomy programs that are found in institutions that also have accredited laboratory science programs, but they have not sought NAACLS approval for the phlebotomy program. National recognition of the phlebotomy programs provides extra credibility and distinguishes these programs from the short term classes located in many communities. NAACLS encourages all quality phlebotomy programs to seek approval to meet the Standards by which all phlebotomy programs are measured. This ability to merge the phlebotomy Self-Study Report with an already accredited program Self-Study Report should provide an incentive to have the phlebotomy program become NAACLS approved. All questions and comments are welcome. Contact the NAACLS office for further information.
