Volume 89 - Spring/Summer 2005

NAACLS is Studying Advanced Level CLS/MT
Lucy J. Randles, M.A., CLS/CLDDir
While the discussions during the 2004 NAACLS October Futures Conference clearly indicated the some attendees saw little need or benefit to raising the CLS/MT entry level from a baccalaureate to a master's degree, there was considerable support for exploring other options for CLS/MT graduate level education. Much discussion surrounded the development of a clinical doctoral level degree for Clinical Laboratory Science practitioners. As a result, the NAACLS Board of Directors appointed a task force to explore development of accreditation standards for programs awarding a doctorate in laboratory practice.

The task force is in the process of identifying the important questions, researching the answers, and identifying the resources critical to the successful implementation of this new potential level of accreditation. The Coordinating Council on the Clinical Laboratory Workforce (CCCLW), a coalition of more than 20 laboratory related organizations and agencies, has agreed to promote such a model as a recruitment and retention strategy. Further, the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), one of NAACLS sponsoring organizations, is developing a position paper and possible model for a clinical doctorate practitioner.

The task force, which has met by teleconference, will meet face to face prior to the summer review committee meetings. Following this meeting, the task force expects to be forwarding a recommendation and possible first draft Standards for Clinical Laboratory Science advanced practitioner programs to the NAACLS Board of Directors. The Task Force members are: Randall Lambrecht, PhD, MT(ASCP) Mark Kellogg, PhD, MT(ASCP) Lucy J. Randles, MA, CLS/CLDir Vicki S. Freeman, PhD, MT(ASCP)SC Isaac D. Montoya, PhD, CMC, CLS(NCA) David D Gale, PhD
