President's Report
by Shauna Anderson, PhD, MT(ASCP)C, CLS(NCA)
President, Board of Directors

I am honored to serve as President of the NAACLS Board of Directors for the next two years. I have been the Director of a CLS/MT program at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah for the past 32 years. I have been associated with NAACLS for 13 years and have served in many capacities during that time. I have especially enjoyed presenting various workshops for NAACLS and meeting many of my colleagues in laboratory sciences at these workshops and various other capacities. I have seen the profession grow in stature over the years.

"NAACLS is committed to being the premier international agency for accreditation and approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and related health professions through the involvement of expert volunteers and its commitment to public service," as stated in the Mission Statement. The Board of Directors and Review Committee members understand the difficulties faced in various laboratory science programs. We want to be sensitive to those issues that each of us face.

In the coming months, the Board and Review Committees will investigate several issues that will no doubt strengthen our professions and streamline the accreditation/approval processes. The issues include but are not limited to the following:

  • Determine the need and feasibility of accrediting a clinical practice doctorate program and, if appropriate, develop competencies and standards.
  • Continue to collaborate with other agencies such as the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP), Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (ASPA), Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), American Medical Association (AMA), and Board of Registry, to reduce duplication of required information.
  • Explore the possibilities of utilizing electronic site visitor training.
  • Investigate the evaluation process for distance learning programs.
  • Study the possibility for the submission of electronic Self-Study Reports.

NAACLS understands the pressures created by a qualified workforce shortage and will continue to look for ways to streamline processes but still maintain standards that provide for quality programs. All comments are welcomed in this regard. May I also express special thanks to all those who volunteer their time and use their unique talents on NAACLS' behalf. After all, we all strive for excellence which ultimately translates into quality patient care. I look forward to serving our profession in this capacity
