NAACLS Appoints a New Chief Executive Officer
by Shauna Anderson, PhD, MT(ASCP)C, CLS(NCA)
President, Board of Directors

After an extensive national search, it is with a great deal of pleasure that I introduce Dr. Dianne Cearlock as the new Chief Executive Officer of NAACLS. Dr. Cearlock has been an educator and practitioner of clinical laboratory sciences throughout her career. After graduating from Northern Illinois University (NIU) with a BS degree in Medical Technology, she was employed in the Microbiology/Immunology Department at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. She returned to school and completed an MS degree from NIU in Adult and Continuing Education. Her first teaching position was at Kankakee Community College (KCC) in Kankakee, IL, where she held a joint appointment in the Medical Laboratory Technician Program and the Department of Life Sciences. The tips she received from fellow faculty members during informal conversations at KCC were contributing factors for the formulation of her philosophy of education and much of her teaching effectiveness.

Wanting to complete a doctoral degree, she entered the program in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Illinois in Chicago (UIC) and studied under the direction of Dr. Sheldon Dray. Her research there focused on investigating the biochemical properties of a serine proteinase inhibitor produced by an established, retrovirally-infected, human T lymphocyte line. While at UIC, she considered shifting her career focus to basic science research but found she missed the immediacy and relevance of the clinical laboratory. When a teaching opportunity became available in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program at NIU, she realized that clinical laboratory science education was the career focus that most called to her. She completed the requirements for the PhD degree in Microbiology and Immunology and became a full-time faculty member at NIU.

Dr. Cearlock has served in various capacities while at NIU. She published a number of peer-reviewed articles, many in collaboration with colleagues both in and outside of the clinical laboratory science field, and gave numerous presentations at regional, national and international conferences. She practiced as a clinical laboratory scientist at the university's Health Service Laboratory in the weekend acute care clinic for over 10 years. She mentored students as a faculty advisor of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Club, Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, and Health House (a residential community for students pursuing careers in healthcare). She was honored by receiving the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award (having been nominated by her students) and the College of Health and Human Sciences Fisher Award for excellence in community and professional service (having been nominated by her College colleagues). She has served as the CLS Program Director, Acting Chair of the School of Allied Health Professions, and in a variety of leadership positions at NIU and with ASCLS and the Illinois Society for Microbiology.

Although she expects to miss teaching in her new role as CEO of NAACLS, Dr. Cearlock is pleased to retain her connections to clinical laboratory sciences and higher education from an accreditation perspective. She believes that clinical laboratory science fields are entering an exciting growth cycle and that programs and NAACLS will be challenged but can contribute to the momentum and a tremendous future.
