President's Report
by Shauna Anderson, PhD, MT(ASCP)C, CLS(NCA) President, Board of Directors
|
I had the opportunity to teach a workshop at the Clinical Laboratory
Educator's Conference (CLEC) this February. It was a pleasure to interact with
experienced program directors and meet so many new, enthusiastic program
directors. It is our hope that the information presented was beneficial and will
help with the preparation of the Self-Study Report and for the site visit. The
NAACLS staff and members of the CLSPRC are always willing to help with all
aspects of the accreditation process. Please feel free to use them as resources.
This year will mark a significant change at NAACLS. It is with much sadness that
we say goodbye to Dr. Olive Kimball as Chief Executive Officer. At the same
time, we celebrate her accomplishments during the 13-plus years that she has
been with NAACLS. Dr. Kimball is a wonderful example of a professional. She has
been instrumental in elevating NAACLS as a premier accreditation agency. Kudos
to Dr. Kimball (see article on Dr. Kimball in this issue) for her service.
After much consideration, NAACLS is excited about Dr. Dianne Cearlock accepting
the CEO position. Dr. Cearlock is an experienced educator and administrator. Her
leadership will continue to lift NAACLS' position in the specialized
accreditation arena (please see article on Dr. Cearlock in this issue).
As I am sure you are aware, the Special Edition of the NAACLS News addressed the
concept and background of a Clinical Doctorate in Clinical Laboratory Science
degree. A graduate task force, chaired by Dr. David D. Gale, PhD, conducted a
March 1, 2006 Stakeholder Meeting. After the findings of that meeting were
evaluated and presented to the NAACLS Board of Directors in April 2006, it was
determined that, in coordination with the ASCLS task force, competencies should
be incorporated into proposed accreditation Standards. These Standards must be
approved by the NAACLS Board of Directors before they are released for public
comment.
The NAACLS Graduate Task Force members are dedicated professionals. They have
worked long and hard to research background information, examine literature from
other professions, and then combine findings to produce an amazing model for
consideration. Special thanks to those committee members and to the stakeholders
who attended the March meeting and provided important perspectives and comments
