NAACLS is committed to accountability and service to the public through the
accreditation and approval of programs in clinical laboratory sciences. To
achieve those goals, NAACLS depends on dedicated and ethical service from
volunteers and staff members. NAACLS' many volunteers include members of the
Board of Directors, paper reviewers, site visitors, review committees members,
and others.
Meet the President
Please let me introduce you to one of the many outstanding NAACLS volunteers -
our new President of the Board of Directors, Cheryl Caskey. President Caskey was
nominated by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (ASCLS) for a
NAACLS Board member position and was elected by the NAACLS Board in 2002 and
again in 2006. She assumed the responsibilities of President in September 2007
for a two-year term. President Caskey has played many roles and received many
accolades for her unswerving (some might say relentless) advocacy of clinical
laboratory practice and practitioners. She serves as a representative on the
Clinical Coordinating Council on the Laboratory Workforce (CCCLW; please see the
article about the CCCLW in this issue), is a member of the ASCLS Consumer
Response team, and edits ASCLS Today. She was a two-term Regional Director and
former President of ASCLS. In July, 2007 she was presented the prestigious 2007
ASCLS Member of the Year award. On top of all this - she has a paying job! When
she is not fulfilling one of her many professional service roles, she serves as
Compliance Officer for Omega Diagnostics, L.L.C. out of Shreveport, LA. As one
might expect from a manager in charge of compliance, President Caskey lives and
breathes accountability. She brings this perspective to her role as NAACLS
President of the Board of Directors. (Please see the President's Report in this
issue.) It is fitting that, at a time when accrediting bodies are under
increased scrutiny for accountability and transparency, President Caskey was
selected to lead NAACLS.
Additions to the NAACLS Website Planned
The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), which recognizes NAACLS
and many other accrediting bodies, encourages accrediting bodies to take
measures to increase transparency and service to the public. Among CHEA's
suggestions is that accrediting bodies simplify and enhance the ways by which
the public may access information about program accreditation and approval
decisions. To remain accountable and improve NAACLS' transparency and service to
the public, several new initiatives are planned for implementation in 2008 and
beyond. First, a summary of the latest data gathered by the annual survey of
programs will be posted on NAACLS' website in composite format and updated once
a year. While this information has always been available to those who requested
it, posting it on the website makes it more convenient for program officials,
laboratory managers, and members of the public to access data and evaluate
trends in clinical laboratory sciences education and numbers of graduates.
Second, "snapshots" of NAACLS accredited and approved programs will be posted on
the NAACLS website. Information to be included in the snapshots are the date of
the last program review, the formal action resulting from the last review (e.g.,
the number of years awarded or satisfactory progress report), the date of the
next review or progress report, and the number of program graduates/certificants
including the percentage finding employment within six months of completing the
program. Future plans for inclusion in the snapshots are three-year average pass
rates for certification examinations. This information will be included after a
phase-in period during which program officials will receive notification of this
change. These additions to the NAACLS website will position NAACLS in the
forefront of a movement towards increased accountability, transparency, and
service to the public.
