NAACLS  Workshops Prepare New (and Experienced) Program Officials
by Dianne M. Cearlock, PhD
Chief Executive Officer
Nearly 50 participants attended the NAACLS workshop, "Understanding Standards in Accreditation," in Chicago on October 12, 2007. The workshop was presented by John Landis, MS, MT(ASCP). Mr. Landis is Professor Emeritus at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, and he has many years of experience as a NAACLS volunteer. Mr. Landis chaired the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program Review Committee (CLSPRC) from 2005-2006 and continues his role as a frequent program accreditation site visitor.

The workshop covered an overview of the self study process, discussion of each Standard and how compliance may be documented, an exercise in writing educational objectives, and evaluation of program/student outcomes.

A number of the workshop participants took advantage of special reduced pricing by registering for two companion workshops - the October workshop in Chicago and a second workshop, "Education Methodologies," which will be presented on February 21, 2008 in Savannah, Georgia, directly preceding the Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference (CLEC).

Registration for the February workshop is open until February 1, 2008, and information is available on the NAACLS website at www.naacls.org. "Education Methodologies" will be presented by Lucille Contois, MA, MT(ASCP). Ms. Contois was a member of the NAACLS Board of Directors from 1999-2007 and served two terms as Vice President. She served on the CLSPRC for eight years prior to her service on the Board of Directors. Ms. Contois directs several clinical laboratory programs at Northern Michigan University. "Education Methodologies" will expand upon material presented in the first workshop and cover writing objectives in three educational domains, ranking objectives by taxonomic levels, identifying key components in instructional units, correlating objectives with evaluation methods, and more.

NAACLS remains committed to mentoring new program officials and assisting experienced program officials by offering practical and interactive continuing education opportunities in areas related to program accreditation and approval. NAACLS encourages all program officials to take advantage of these opportunities. Also, NAACLS Program Services Coordinators are excellent sources of information for program officials through telephone and email communications.
