Education Methodologies Workshop Serves 80 Participants

Eighty participants attended the NAACLS workshop, "Education Methodologies," at the Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference on February 21st in Savannah, Georgia. The workshop directly preceeded the opening session of the CLEC from 7:00am to 12:30pm. Participants who completed the workshop received 4.5 hours of continuing education credits.

The workshop was presented by Lucille Contois, MA, MT (ASCP). Ms. Contois directs several clinical laboratory science programs at Northern Michigan University. She has many years of experience as a member of the NAACLS Clinical Laboratory Sciences Programs Review Committee (CLSPRC, now the Review Committee on Accredited Programs, or RCAP). She was a member of the NAACLS Board of Directors from 1999-2007 and served as Vice President for two terms.

This interactive workshop focused on the development of educational materials including learning goals and objectives, learning tools, and evaluation methods. Participants learned about and had opportunities to write objectives in three educational domains and at different taxonomic levels and to compare their objectives with the examples provided in the workshop materials. The differences in objectives that are effective when using a variety of instructional methods (lecture, demonstration, clinical practice), learning tools, and evaluation methods were also covered. The variety and uses of evaluation methods were also explored. For example, several strategies for evaluating learning in the clinical setting include anecdotal reports, critical incident reports, completion of checklists, and performance rating scales.

NAACLS' commitment to the professional development of program officials comprises part of the agency's strategic plan. Accreditation- and approval-related continuing education opportunities for both new and experienced program officials continue to be offered regularly. In development for the future are educational opportunities offered using an on-line format. Stay tuned to NAACLS website for announcements about future workshops and online education opportunities.
