Qatar University Celebrates Accreditation of the Biomedical Sciences Program
By Victor A. Skrinska, PhD, Lead Scholar/Distinguished Professor Biomedical
Sciences Program, Department of Health Sciences Qatar University
On April 30, 2008, the Health Sciences Department of Qatar University's College
of Arts and Sciences celebrated receiving an official 5-year initial
accreditation award for its Biomedical Sciences Program from NAACLS. The event
titled, "A Journey to Success," was attended by university faculty, students and
administrators along with distinguished partners and guests from the community.
At the celebration ceremony held in Ibn-Khaldoon Hall, President Professor
Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad congratulated faculty, students and community partners
for their commitment to the accreditation process. Professor Al-Misnad noted:
"While this is a great success for the institution, it is also a time for
self-reflection and self-evaluation. It is not the end of the process but a
first step to the university's goal of excellence."
Dr. Mohammad Fathy Saoud, President of Qatar Foundation and former Dean of the
College of Sciences, traced the origins of the Biomedical Sciences Program when,
in 1982, a joint committee from Qatar University and Hamad Medical Corporation
was formed to discuss forming the Biomedical Sciences Program. Hamad Medical
Corporation is the main healthcare provider in Qatar. Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences, Dr. Siham Al-Qaradawi stated, "It is a true success story.
The program has set the standard for success for other programs at Qatar
University to follow."
Dr. Victor Skrinska, Distinguished Professor and On-Site Coordinator of the
Biomedical Sciences Program, said that Qatar University has set a milestone in
the biomedical sciences profession and has set the stage for other programs to
follow accreditation worldwide. The Distance Program Director, Cindy Brown, MA,
MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA), commented on the dedication and hard work of the faculty
during the accreditation process and the opportunities that the graduates of the
program now have for professional certification. President Professor Al-Misnad
was presented with the accreditation certificate by Cindy Brown.
Qatar University established the Biomedical Sciences Program in 1984, which now
has more than 300 alumni of various nationalities. There are currently 93
students at various stages in the Program. On June 25th, the University
graduated the first class of 13 students who have completed the accredited
Biomedical Sciences Program and who will be eligible for professional
certification.
This program is the first to be accredited by NAACLS outside of the 50 states
and Puerto Rico.
