NAACLS Volunteer, Dr.Vicki S. Freeman, Receives 2008 Piper Professor Award

Vicki S. Freeman, PhD, was honored at a reception on June 17, 2008, at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, for receiving the 2008 Piper Professor Award. The Piper Professor program seeks to bring recognition to outstanding achievement in the teaching profession in colleges and universities in Texas and is sponsored by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. Nominations for awards are sought annually from institutions of higher learning in Texas. A selection committee tries to identify well-rounded, outgoing teachers who are devoted to the profession and have made special impact on students and the community.

Dr. Freeman serves as the Chair of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at UTMB. She has been a volunteer accreditation site visitor for NAACLS. She was a member of the NAACLS Graduate Task Force for several years. The Graduate Task Force, comprised of a broad-based group of clinical laboratory science stakeholders, assessed the need and developed accreditation standards for the clinical doctorate degree in clinical laboratory science. The NAACLS Board of Directors approved the Standards in 2006. Dr. Freeman also provided valuable input as a member of NAACLS Strategic Plan Overview Task Force, a group that has helped shape NAACLS future direction and priorities.
